Snoring Appliance

Snoring is a common problem that is usually brought to the attention of those affected by their peers. On one hand, the life partner or roommate is prevented from sleeping by the snoring noises. On the other hand, the health risks of snoring should not be underestimated, as snoring is always associated with a lack of oxygen in the brain. This includes, especially when accompanying breathing disorders occur, daytime fatigue and its associated illnesses.

Snoring is favored by the following factors:

•     Enlargement of the tonsils and adenoids
•     Relaxation of the palate
•     Enlargement of the base of the tongue
•     Overweight

A significant proportion of snorers also suffer from OSAS syndrome (obstructive sleep apnea syndrome). OSAS involves breathing cessations (apneas) during sleep, leading to pronounced daytime fatigue and an urge to fall asleep (microsleep).

Snoring Therapy with Snoring Appliance

A snoring appliance slightly pushes the lower jaw forward. This forward positioning optimizes mouth breathing during sleep.

How is a Snoring Appliance made?

First, we take a scan of the upper and lower jaw to make two plastic splints. The splints are connected by a small, metal-free joint. With the help of this construction, the lower jaw is gently pushed forward. This change in position prevents the tongue from falling backward. The throat remains open, and the typical snoring noises are significantly reduced or disappear altogether.

How Long Does an Anti-Snoring Appliance Last?

The duration of how long a snoring appliance lasts cannot be answered in a blanket statement. In general, the snoring appliance lasts for several years. If you suffer from teeth grinding, the lifespan of the appliance is shortened due to significant wear and tear. In some cases, the appliance needs to be replaced when tooth restoration, such as a dental crown, is performed.
