Root canal treatment

If there is an irreversible inflammation of the tooth nerve, for example due to cavities or as a result of trauma, the diseased nerve must be removed, and a root canal treatment must be performed.

During a root canal treatment, the inflamed or dead tissue is removed from the inner part of the tooth. Then, the hollow spaces are cleaned and disinfected before the root tips are sealed again. This requires a lot of know-how because the interior of the tooth is often branched and always very small.

When is a root canal treatment necessary?

Toothaches are often caused by an inflamed tooth nerve, usually due to cavities. If not treated promptly, bacteria can attack and inflame the jawbone. Acute inflammations are often associated with severe pain, swelling, and fever. A chronic root canal infection can weaken and damage the entire organism.

For tooth preservation, a root canal treatment can be performed.

How does a root canal treatment proceed?

During a root canal treatment, local anesthesia is administered if the tooth is not already dead. The affected tissue and all bacteria must be removed to prevent further infections. Crowns or bridges on the affected tooth may need to be removed or damaged.

After administering the anesthesia, the tooth is drilled down to the tooth nerve. The length of the root canal is determined with special instruments and an X-ray, and then it is cleaned with very fine files, drills, and rinsing solutions. We perform these steps with the utmost caution to avoid unnecessarily weakening the tooth.

A medication is applied to the tooth until the inflammation allows for its final treatment.

Subsequently, the canal system is dried and sealed with a biocompatible and well-tolerated material. The filling protects the tooth from further bacterial entry.

What are the success rates of the treatment?

The bone surrounding the tooth root takes about 6-12 months to fully heal. The success rate of a well-performed root canal-treated tooth is very high. If no further damage occurs to the tooth, a root canal treatment can last into old age.
