GUM RECESSION (Gingival Recession)

DO YOU SUFFER FROM GUM RECESSION?

Healthy gums are firmly attached to the bony foundation. They surround the teeth, providing excellent protection to the tooth roots. Healthy gums prevent gum inflammation.

When the gums recede, it is referred to as gum recession or gingival recession in medical terms. This involves the retraction of the gums from one or more teeth, without inflammation being responsible for it. The compromised aesthetics, increased sensitivity of the teeth to hot and cold, sweet and sour foods, and a higher susceptibility to root caries are unpleasant consequences for those affected.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF GUM RECESSION?

Several factors influence gum recession:

  •     Age-related, hereditary recession
  •     Incorrect tooth brushing technique (excessive pressure with the toothbrush) and using brushes with too hard or worn bristles
  •     Tight lip or palate frenula that pull the gums away
  •     Piercing of the lip frenulum
  •     Teeth grinding

HOW IS GUM RECESSION TREATED?

Especially in the area of the front teeth, gum recession is an aesthetic problem. Generally, gingival recession poses a problem for the long-term preservation of dental health.

Mucosal Grafts

In our practice in Zell am Moos, we offer mucosal grafts (connective tissue grafts) for gingival recession. During a mucosal grafting procedure, the exposed tooth roots are covered with a piece of gum tissue. In a minimally invasive surgical technique, autologous connective tissue from the palate is transplanted. The thin gums of the affected teeth are reinforced, and the exposed tooth roots are covered with new gum tissue.

This surgical coverage of the exposed tooth roots is the best long-term alternative as it resolves sensitivity issues, restores tooth protection, and achieves the desired cosmetic effect.

Mucosal grafting should only be performed by a specialist in the field, as the treatment is considered one of the demanding specialized areas of periodontal surgery.

We are happy to advise you in a comprehensive discussion in our practice in Zell am Moos.
